Captain Tammie Jo Shults became one of the first female F/A-18 Hornet pilots in the United States Navy. Her duties, before women were allowed into combat roles, encompassed teaching Out Of Control Flight as well as serving as a bogey/bandit against Top Gun students as well as other squadrons, ships or entire carrier groups.
After concluding her Navy career, she flew over forest fires one summer then became a pilot for Southwest Airlines. Tammie Jo’s incredible history and talent received wide acclaim on April 17, 2018, when she successfully landed a Southwest Boeing 737 after an engine exploded at high altitude, causing multiple system failures and a rapid depressurization. The successful landing of Flight 1380 in Philadelphia saved 148 total lives including passengers and crew, as detailed in her National Best Seller book, “Nerves of Steel”.

1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Disciplined Growth in a Volatile Market
Mutuals have emerged from recent market volatility with improved underwriting performance and renewed capacity to grow. The question is no longer whether growth is available, it’s how to pursue it with discipline. In a competitive, rational market, sustainable expansion depends on clear appetite strategy, operational consistency, and tight alignment between underwriting and claims. This discussion focuses on how leadership teams grow intentionally while protecting surplus, relationships, and brand equity.
Moderator: Clifford Cohen, Epoq
2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Growth & Capital in the Industry/Mutual Holding Companies
This session will explore how today’s capital environment is reshaping growth strategies for Mid‑Atlantic mutual insurers. We’ll examine overall industry capital levels and then narrow in on the capital position and capital dynamics specific to mutual companies, highlighting how these profiles influence risk appetite, product strategy, and expansion plans for organizations of all sizes. We will also discuss how AM Best is viewing capital adequacy and balance sheet strength for mutuals, and what that means for strategic choices around organic growth, diversification, and reinsurance. Finally, we’ll look at how mutual holding company structures are being used in practice to access capital, enable partnerships, and support long‑term growth, while still preserving the core mutual value proposition.
